Sakyukan

The Sakyukan was built in 1933 as the house for the head of the Niigata branch of the Bank of Japan. Thirty successive branch heads and their families lived here until 1999. Now the building is open to the public (no entrance fee required) and serves as a cultural facility for the city of Niigata. Exhibitions, concerts, and other events are held here on occasion and attract many local residents and tourists.

In the first half of the 20th century, it was fashionable for upper-class houses in Japan to have a Western-style parlor room next to the entry hall. The Sakyukan has a Western-style parlor and study, in addition to nine Japanese-style rooms and three rooms for storage and servants. The house was built on top of a large sand dune near the coast, and the entire town of Niigata could be seen from the windows of a Japanese-style room on the second floor. A narrow corridor runs through the center of the house. Traditionally, Japanese homes were built so that people walked directly through several rooms when moving through the middle of the house, so this central corridor was an innovative new design that allowed for greater privacy. A warehouse is located in the innermost part of the house. In case a disaster hit the Niigata Branch of the Bank of Japan, this area could be used as a temporary vault for the bank’s money. Now, the warehouse is used as an art gallery.

The beautiful garden is landscaped in the traditional Japanese style. By viewing the garden from inside the house, you can enjoy the beauty of nature throughout the four seasons. We hope that you will enjoy the aesthetics of traditional Japanese homes during your visit to the Sakyukan. You can also find other historical buildings in this area, so please feel free to take a walk through the neighborhood.

sakyukan image

Sakyukan

sakyukan image

sakyukan image
